·         At the time of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) the Muslims did not mint their own gold dinars yet. The first Islamic dinars were not minted until 50 years after the death of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) in year 697.

·         The solidus in use at the time of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) was first introduced by Emperor Constantine I in year 12 AD. It was 4.5 grams of 24 Karat (pure, 99.9%) gold.

·         Pure gold is soft, so when the people used the coins, it wore out and the weight decreased.

·         But when the Romans paid their taxes with the coins, the treasury would melt and re-mint the coins. So the coins’ weight was maintained at 4.5 grams.

·         However, the Roman solidus that circulated among the Arabs (dinar) were not used to pay taxes to the Roman emperor, so they did not get re-minted.

·         So, over the years, the coins wore out, and the average weight of the dinars in the Arab world was 4.25 grams.

·         The first dinars made by muslims were those minted by Caliph Abd al-Malik bin Marwan in year 697, 50 years after the death of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.).

·         It weighed 4.25 grams, but its purity was only 22 Karat
(22 Karat means 22÷24 or 91.7% purity, with 8.3% other metals mixed with it).

·         This lower purity was because of their lack of experience in refining and minting technology, whereas the Romans had been doing this for centuries. The intention was to get a coin as pure gold as possible.

Should the Muslim dinar today be 22K or 24K? Should it be 4.25g, 4.5g or more?

According to Ahamed Kameel:

·         The 4.25g of 22K gold used today is not correct, although for zakat this error is not harmful as it only lowers the nisab.

·         4.5g of 24K gold is also not correct, from the hadith “The system of measure is the system of Medina”. [This error is important as it would raise the nisab for zakat].

·         It should be 4.25g of 24K gold.

·         However, 24K gold is soft and will wear out.

·         Ahamed Kameel says it should be re-minted to maintain it at 4.25 grams.

·         This is not cheap today. One dinar (4.25g) now costs RM600, and 0.25g is 1/17 of that, RM35

·         22K gold is much harder and will not wear out so much.

·         If we make the 22K-gold coin a bit bigger, 4.64g, then its gold content will be 4.25g
(91.7% of 4.64g = 4.25g)

Conclusion: If 22K gold is used, it must weigh 4.64 grams to contain 4.25 grams of pure gold.

TERJEMAHAN

·         Pada zaman Nabi (saw) umat Islam belum lagi membuat dinar emas mereka sendiri. Dinar Islam yang pertama tidak dibuat sehinggalah tahun 697, iaitu 50 tahun selepas wafatnya Nabi (saw).

·         Nabi (saw) menerima-pakai solidus emas Roman Byzantium sebagai standard kewangan bagi umat Islam.

·         Solidus yang digunakan pada zaman Rasulullah (saw) mula diperkenalkan oleh Maharaja Constantine I pada tahun 12 Masihi. Ia adalah emas 24 Karat (tulen, 99.9%) seberat 4.5 gram.

·         Emas tulen adalah lembut, jadi apabila duit syiling ini digunakan, ia menjadi haus dan beratnya makin berkurangan.

·         Tetapi apabila orang-orang Rom membayar cukai mereka dengan syiling ini, bendahari akan melebur dan membuatnya semula. Jadi berat syiling ini dikekalkan pada 4.5 gram.

·         Walau bagaimanapun, solidus Roman (dinar) yang bertukar-tangan di kalangan orang-orang Arab tidak digunakan untuk membayar cukai kepada maharaja Rom, jadi ia tidak dilebur semula.

·         Oleh itu, tahun demi tahun wang ini haus, dan berat purata dinar yang digunakan dikalangan orang Arab adalah 4.25 gram.

·         Dinar pertama yang dibuat oleh orang Islam ialah yang dibuat oleh Khalifah Abd al-Malik bin Marwan pada tahun 697, 50 tahun selepas kewafatan Nabi (saw).

·         Beratnya 4.25 gram, tetapi ketulenannya hanya 22 Karat (ketulenan 22/24 = 91.7%).

·         Ketulenan yang lebih rendah ini ialah kerana kekurangan pengalaman dalam teknologi penulenan dan penempaan, yang mana orang-orang Rom telah melakukannya berabad-abad. Niatnya ialah untuk mendapatkan duit syiling emas seberapa tulen yang mampu.

Patutkah dinar Islam hari ini dibuat 22K atau 24K? Patutkah ia 4.25g, 4.5g atau lebih?

Menurut Ahamed Kameel:

·         4.25g emas 22K yang digunakan hari ini tidak betul, namun kesilapan ini tidak mengapa kerana ia hanya merendahkan nisab zakat.

·         4.5g emas 24K juaga tidak betul, menurut hadith "Sistem ukuran ialah sistem Madinah". [Kesilapan ini adalah penting kerana ia akan meningkatkan nisab zakat].

·         Ia sepatutnya 4.25g emas 24K

·         Walaubagaimanapun, emas 24K adalah lembut dan akan haus. Ahamed Kameel berpendapat ia patut ditempa semula untuk mengekalkannya pada 4.25 gram.

·         Ini tidaklah murah. Satu dinar (4.25g) berharga RM600 hari ini, dan 0.25g ialah 1/17 daripada itu, iaitu RM35.

·         Emas 22K lebih keras serta sedikit sahaja hausnya.

·         Jika dinar 22K dibuat besar sedikit, seberat 4.64g, maka dapatlah kandungan emasnya sebanyak 4.25g. (91.7% daripada 4.64g = 4.25g)

Kesimpulan: Jika emas 22K digunakan, ia mestilah sebanyak 4.64 gram untuk mengandungi 4.25 gram emas tulen.
